Alexander Baker Apartments Open in International Falls, MN, Preserving History and Meeting Critical Housing Needs
The transformation of the historic Alexander Baker building into affordable housing is complete, marking a significant milestone for the community of International Falls. A collaborative effort between Trellis and Kootasca Community Action, this redevelopment preserves a beloved local landmark while addressing a critical need for affordable rental housing.
The newly opened Alexander Baker Apartments, which opened its doors in October 2024, feature affordable one, two, three, and four-bedroom units, including 17 tax credit apartments available to the general public at rates aligned with county Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) limits. Additionally, 10 project-based voucher units are designated to serve high-priority homeless households and individuals with disabilities. Residents will enjoy modern amenities such as lounges, a library, a fitness center, and in-unit dishwashers, as well as easy access to community events and activities at the neighboring Backus Community Center.
This development not only preserves the historic Alexander Baker building but also delivers the first new rental housing in International Falls in more than 30 years. Construction began on September 1, 2023, and the property achieved full occupancy within three months of opening, underscoring the strong demand for affordable housing in the area. The completion of this project is a testament to the power of partnership. Key collaborators include Kootasca Community Action, Frerichs Construction, Urban Work Architects, the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency (MHFA), Wells Fargo, and the City of International Falls.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate the grand opening of Alexander Baker Apartments and welcome our first residents,” said Andrew Perry, President of Trellis Management. “This project reflects a shared vision of preserving history while creating affordable housing that directly addresses the needs of the community. It’s a proud moment for all involved.”
The successful completion of the Alexander Baker Apartments reflects a commitment to serving the greater outstate Minnesota region and its communities. This project serves as a model for how historic preservation and affordable housing development can create brighter futures for the region.
